When the grid goes down, cell service is usually the first thing to go. The UV-82 is the bigger, beefier cousin of BaoFeng's UV-5R line. It puts out up to 8 watts and ships with the NA-771 high-gain antenna, a longer whip that pulls in weaker signals than a stock antenna.

Two push-to-talk buttons let you transmit on either displayed channel without flipping back and forth. It covers VHF and UHF, stores 128 channels and plays FM radio for news. The car charger keeps it topped off on the road, so it's ready when you need it.

Good to Know: Licensing
Anyone can listen, no license needed. To transmit on the ham bands, the FCC requires an amateur radio license. The entry-level Technician license is one 35-question multiple-choice test. And in a real emergency, when life or property is on the line, FCC rules let anyone use any radio to call for help.

How far can the UV-82 talk?
Average range is 5-10 km (3-6 miles). Open ground and high spots push it farther. Hills, buildings and thick woods cut it down.

Will it work when the cell network and power are down?
Yes. It talks radio to radio: no towers, no internet, no service plan. Charge it from the wall or the included car charger and it's ready to go.

Do I need two?
To reach your own people, yes. A radio needs someone on the other end. Most folks buy a pair: one at home, one in the truck or go-bag.

Can it talk to my family's FRS or GMRS walkie talkies?
It can listen to them. Transmitting on FRS and GMRS channels with this radio isn't FCC-approved outside a real emergency, so the simple move is a UV-82 for everyone in your group.

Can it pick up weather reports?
Yes. Tune in NOAA weather broadcasts (162.400-162.550 MHz) or local FM news. It doesn't sound automatic weather alerts. For that, the Kaito KA600L has NOAA alert mode built in.

How do I program it?
Right from the keypad, or faster with free CHIRP software on a computer and a USB programming cable (not included).

Is it waterproof?
No. It has no waterproof rating, so keep it in a pocket or dry bag when the weather turns.
